The Singers

Group members come from a variety of musical backgrounds.

Melanie Robinson (tenor), UHH choral instructor and private voice teacher, is a Big Island winner of the Hawaii Public Radio art song contest and frequent soloist and recitalist around town, as well as music director at the United Community Church. Melanie is also the conductor of the Kanilehua Chorale, Hilo’s premiere chamber music chorus.

Maud Lawrence (lead), a graduate of Hilo High School, holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Hawaii Hilo, and masters degree in education from UH Manoa.. She has performed as a soloist in Way off Broadway, Volcano Festival Chorus and various musicals. Maud is also a member of Kanilehua Chorale.

Susan Wackerbarth (baritone), a UHH English instructor, music has been a lifelong hobby rather than a career. She has sung in choirs since grade school—most recently with Hilo’s Kanilehua Chorale, where the four singers met and formed the Aloha Express.

Roni Koscik (bass) studied piano at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, and voice and drama at the University of Hawaii. She is the owner and Program Director of MusicFun with Aunty Roni, featuring Kindermusik, teaching music to young children from newborn through age five, and to several preschools in East Hawaii. Choral singing has been a part of her life since age 10, and she was cantor/musician at Sacred Heart Church in Pahoa for eight years.
